Disney's Animal Kingdom at Walt Disney World Resort has welcomed a new addition to their family - a baby elephant named Corra weighing 218 pounds.
Corra was born to African elephant mom Nadirah, who herself was born at the park in 2005 and is Nadirah's first calf. Watch the video below to see Corra and Mom together.
The birth of Corra is part of a carefully planned program under the Association of Zoos and Aquariums Species Survival Plan, aimed at the responsible breeding of endangered animals in managed care. This event is particularly special as Nadirah, the new mother, received guidance and comfort from her sister, Luna, during her birthing process. The family's strong bonds are evident, as Corra will soon meet her grandmother, Donna, and aunt, Stella. It's typical for adult females in elephant herds to assist in raising young elephants until they are about eight years old.
Nadirah became pregnant through natural breeding in early 2022 and received specialized care throughout her nearly 22-month pregnancy. A dedicated team, including animal keepers, endocrinologists, and veterinarians, worked tirelessly to ensure the health and well-being of both mother and calf. Post-natal exams and bonding time are currently underway before Corra joins the rest of the herd at Kilimanjaro Safaris.
