Disney has officially announced that Muppets Courtyard will be the site for the new Monsters, Inc. land at Disney's Hollywood Studios. This decision marks a significant change for the park, as the beloved MuppetVision 3D and surrounding areas will be replaced to make way for the new land.

The choice of Muppets Courtyard comes after months of speculation following the Monsters, Inc. land announcement at D23 2024, with both Muppets Courtyard and Animation Courtyard being considered as potential sites. Despite recent signs that Animation Courtyard might be a strong contender, Disney has ultimately decided to repurpose Muppets Courtyard for this major new addition which will include the highly anticipated suspended door coaster.

The redevelopment will involve the closure of MuppetVision 3D, as well as the transformation of nearby restaurants such as Mama Melrose's Ristorante Italiano, PizzeRizzo, and the surrounding shops. Disney has not yet given a closing date, but a construction on Monsters, Inc. is planned to begin in 2025.

In a short statement about the future of MuppetVision 3D, Disney said, "As we move forward with these changes, we are having creative conversations and exploring ways to preserve the film and other parts of the experience for fans to enjoy in the future."

Disney also announced today that the Muppets will takeover Rock 'n' Rollercoaster, where they will be "teaming up with some of music’s biggest stars for a rockin’ music festival!"

Disney says the new Monsters, Inc. land will be a living, breathing, and not-at-all-scary Monsters-inspired area where you'll be able to stroll the streets alongside some of your favorite monsters.

Picking up after the events of Pixar Animation Studios' beloved film, humans have now been invited to visit the world of Monsters, Inc. — and the monsters need laughter to power the city and keep it running smoothly. But it's not a true visit without the factory itself. You'll be able to see the sights, hear the laughs and zoom through the building just like James P. Sullivan (a.k.a. Sulley) and Mike Wazowski — via a door!

You'll go into the factory and experience the first suspended coaster ever in a Disney park. The coaster will put you right in the middle of the monster action.

I’m hoping for a bit more than Tron/RnRC, but expect less than Cosmic Rewind. This one seems to be a lights on type ride, so they do need more décor in the warehouse. A mid ride door could be well done.

Are you optimistic about its scale/quality?

While really the last thing WDW urgently needs is more indoor coasters, I’m looking forward to it in isolation. Ride and Go Seek is ok, there’s a lot of other properties I think they need to get to Dark rides for preferentially. Coco and Moana I still find a bit strange that they were completely sidelined.

I'd be up for a Monsters Inc. dark ride.

I would not be excited about a MI dark ride, but I would at least be willing to try it. I am never getting on the door coaster.

I would take the DCA Monster dark ride over the door coaster in a second. I am utterly and completely tired of Disney warehouse coasters.

Considering how WDW has a low number of darkrides, I would welcome any addition.

Eisner did a fine job erasing his own legacy in the second half of his tenure.... I'm curious, for WDW folks, would there be interest in using the animatronics, ride vehicles and other assets from the DCA Monsters Inc ride? It's widely expected to close and make way for Avatar in that corner of DCA. While a pretty meh experience in its current form, with some plussing or even using the flashlight technology from Tokyo, it could be exactly the kind of C ticket dark ride experience Hollywood Studios is lacking.

I must admit the Monsters Inc ride at Tokyo Disney was fantastic! The animatronics were stunning too! Hope to see some of the “love” they got in the new development! The ride is shown below if you haven’t seen it yet!

As a point of comparison Dollywood has a family suspended coaster that has a height restrictions of 39" I do think the Monsters one might be a little more thrilling than that one but would be surprised if restriction is more than 40" or max 42" ... But not like the ride system/safety mechanism of a suspended coaster can't be done for kids Plus there will be the theater show for folks that like Monsters Inc but can't/won't do coasters of any type

That would have taken the sting out of the Muppet vision loss. If they say, we are restoring the Muppets courtyard with original fountain. And we're adding a new Muppets ride/show with a cool meet and greet. Then if we could see what the actual plan is for the retheme, people might be ok with this. I think the fact that we really have nothing on this has made things worse. Personally I think this reskin is nothing more than a stopgap to whatever the real plan is. I can't see them keeping the muppets around long term.

I think it will be fun. And good to keep something "Muppets" around... I hope they add a little something more around it.. a Muppets miniland they never built around the old show...an additional ride and restaurant would be great..

Not that much, mainly because the best elements of the ride are not being removed as of yet. The coaster itself is not changing, and you will still get music while you ride it. Now, they COULD ruin the theme, but on the surface, this seems like it's a decent change.

Fantasyland is supposed to be a hodge podge of IPs and non-IP rides. If the goal is to recreate a “fantasyland“ for DHS then I think something like this would work. It’s a lot of attractions and if recent history holds, a new ”land” means 2 rides max so unlikely to happen at this scale but I’d be all in favor of it. As far as ride systems, whatever they build next for DHS probably should have no height requirements. Traditional dark rides, boat rides, etc.
