As of 5:06 pm EDT on Tuesday, September 24, 2024, a Tropical Storm Warning has been officially issued for Orange and Osceola counties, including the Walt Disney World area, in response to the growing threat from Tropical Storm Helene.

This warning indicates that tropical storm-force winds are expected within the area in the next 36 hours, with the latest forecasts calling for hazardous conditions across central Florida.

Increasing Threat from Tropical Storm Helene

Helene is projected to intensify quickly and grow in size as it moves into the eastern Gulf of Mexico. Residents and visitors along the west coast of Florida, including areas near the Florida Big Bend, are under significant threat from life-threatening storm surge. The highest surge levels are expected in the Big Bend area, where a Hurricane Warning has already been issued. Local officials in these areas are urging residents to follow evacuation orders to protect lives and property.

Damaging hurricane-force winds are expected along portions of the Florida Big Bend, with preparations needing to be complete by early Thursday as tropical storm conditions are forecast to begin within this area.

Key Forecast and Impacts

Winds:

  • Peak Wind Forecast: Sustained winds of 25-35 mph, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph.
  • Potential Wind Impact: Winds of 39 to 57 mph could cause limited damage, including broken tree limbs, uprooted trees, and damage to lightweight structures like sheds, awnings, and carports. Hazardous driving conditions are expected, especially on bridges and elevated roadways, with some power outages likely across the region.

Flooding Rain:

  • Peak Rainfall Amounts: 1 to 3 inches, with isolated areas receiving higher amounts.
  • Flooding Threat: Moderate flooding is possible, especially in low-lying areas and those prone to poor drainage. Flood waters could cause road closures, make streets impassable, and potentially affect the foundations of buildings. Evacuations and rescues may be required in the hardest-hit areas.

Tornado Risk:

  • Tornado Threat: The conditions are somewhat favorable for isolated tornadoes, which could cause localized damage, including roof and structural impacts, toppled trees, and disruptions to power and communication lines.

Disney World Preparations and Safety Tips

Walt Disney World has not yet announced any changes to its operations for the upcoming days, but it has a comprehensive hurricane protocol in place. Safety measures may include canceling outdoor shows, parades, and fireworks if high winds are expected.

There's another one out around Africa with a 50% chance of forming, but who knows where that will go...My niece is in Madagascar. I asked if she would bring me back a Lemur, and I also asked if she had met the King Of Versailles. She told me in her latest post jokingly that she had met someone there and she wasn't coming home! :)

“Direct hurricane hit” isn’t a singular defined thing. The focus with buildings is typically winds but hurricane force winds is a big, open ended range. With regards to Walt Disney World, the ultimate wind loads are often overstated.

Isn't the castle fortified to withstand a direct hurricane hit?

MCO is not a shelter, and the terminals will close during a storm FYI.

On a non weather related early morning we walked through MCO Main Terminal at 3am to get to the TSA checkpoint. There were hundreds of passengers sleeping on the many couches chairs and carpeted floors . With MCO probably impacted by Helene I'd expect more than hundreds to be hunkered down in the Main Terminal.

A long day in the convention center, that night in the ballrooms then returned to our room the next afternoon. We were given papers that described limited resort services , during the storm and post storm. FL was lucky with Floyd. Weather guys forecasted it to be more destructive than Andrew that wiped out Homestead and Florida City in 92'.
