Disney's Hollywood Studios Opening Process - October 21 2024
Posted: Monday October 21, 2024 8:45am ET by WDWMAGIC Staff

Guests visiting Disney's Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World are in for a change in the morning entry procedure. The park has just updated its process for guests arriving ahead of its official opening time, making early entry more accessible for all parkgoers. Here's a breakdown of what has changed and what it means for your day at the park.

For a scheduled 9:00 am opening, all guests—including non-resort guests—are now allowed through the tap styles starting at 8:00 am. Previously, this early entry privilege was only offered to Disney Resort hotel guests, while non-resort guests were held at the main entrance before the tap points until park opening time. With the new procedure, everyone can get past the initial checkpoint earlier, providing more time to enjoy the Hollywood Studios atmosphere before the attractions open.

Once inside the park, there are three designated checkpoints for resort guests participating in the Early Entry benefit: one on Sunset Boulevard, one on Grand Avenue for Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge, and one at the entrance to Toy Story Land. Resort guests can pass through these checkpoints and join attraction lines ready for the 8:30 am start of Early Entry, while non-resort guests are held at these points until the official park opening time at 9:00 am.

Mickey and Minnie's Runaway Railway is located before any of the checkpoints, and guests are able to enter the line if staying at a Disney resort hotel.

This update marks a return to the pre-pandemic experience, where all guests could enter the park before opening. The adjustment balances guest flow and enhances the experience for those who want to start in the early morning at Hollywood Studios —whether that means grabbing a coffee at Trolley Car Café or taking in the sights along Hollywood Boulevard, Echo Lake, and other areas of the park.

For Disney Resort hotel guests, the updated process still retains the key benefit of a 30 minute early access to rides and attractions, giving them a bit of a head start before the entire park opens to all guests. Meanwhile, non-resort guests are no longer held outside the turnstiles, making for a more relaxed and enjoyable morning arrival.

Here is an overview of the arrival experience for a 9 am opening at Disney's Hollywood Studios.

  • 7:00 am - Parking plaza opens
  • 8:00 am - All guests can pass through the entry tap points
  • 8:00 am - Resort hotel guests participating in Early Entry can enter attraction lines
  • 8:30 am - Resort hotel guests using Early Entry can experience attractions.
  • 9:00 am - All guests can enter attraction lines as the park officially opens/

That's because I'm always in front of you with my apparently undetectable fingerprint trying to convince the CM that I remember which finger I used. Next time I'm using my middle finger so I'll be ready when they ask. ;)

Exactly. You had to be at DHS this early anyway if you had any hope of rope dropping. If I’m already at the park, I’d rather be in the park instead of stressing over whether I’ll be in the entry line that gets stopped for 5 minutes. Feels like I’m always in that line…

That's actually a good thing, though. Not everything that benefits the company is a detriment to the guest. I would love the opportunity to get a little breakfast instead of standing outside in the sun waiting for the park to open.

"We are giving guests more flexibility to be able to enjoy shopping and dining opportunities in the park prior to park open!"

I went in September 2019 and remember being held outside the park since I was offsite. However IIRC this was when they were doing the 3 hour EMH shortly after SWGE opened so maybe procedures were different for that.

It’s common at DHS and DAK, in particular. MK and Epcot are more likely to do a traditional rope drop at the scheduled time. Although, based upon the statement above mine, perhaps this changed when Tron moved to standby?

It probably depends on ops and the day. They are already cycling rides before the 8:30am start. When I was at MK last weekend for early entry, they started putting guests on 7DMT at 7:25am when early entry officially started at 7:30am for a 8am park opening. Edit: we were held at the Fantasyland bridge after scanning in. Sometime between 7:20 and 7:25am, they allowed us to go and queue up in lines for rides.

Just out of curiosity, how common is it for rides to open early? My daughter and I were there in August and early entry was at 8:30. They started letting guests into the park at about 8 and by 8:15, we were in the preshow room for Rise. I actually checked the app to see if I got the opening time wrong but it said 8:30 early entry & 9am park opening. Just wondering if it’s common to start things a little early.

I distain most of the changes that have been made recently, prices at new restaurants (cough cough Bakeshop), bland towers, reduced benefits of staying onsite but this seems more of an operational change with the benefit of potential dollars spent a half hour prior to opening. This is simply reverting back to the pre-pandemic operations.

Def a great change. The old process was a pain unless you were very close to the front of tapping in.

And the non-resort guests used that hour to all purchase more merch, food, and beverages and Bob Iger lived happily ever after.
