Disney has received approval from the South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) for its environmental resource permit, clearing the way for the transformation of Tom Sawyer Island and the Rivers of America into a new Cars-themed area at Magic Kingdom.

The permit, issued on February 17, 2025, authorizes modifications to the 407 Basin Stormwater System, which plays a key role in managing water flow and environmental impacts for the planned expansion. This approval comes after Disney submitted additional requested information, addressing concerns about wetland impacts and stormwater management.

Key Details from the Approved Permit

The permit, identified as Permit No. 48-111503-P, covers a 300.82-acre project area and includes modifications to the 407 Basin Stormwater System. As part of the approval, Disney will impact 61.93 acres of wetlands and surface water, with mitigation efforts tied to credits from the Disney Wilderness Preserve and Mira Lago sites. The permit is valid until February 17, 2030, allowing Disney to proceed with necessary site preparations.

The stormwater system updates include new drainage structures and erosion control measures to ensure proper water flow and environmental protection. The project complies with state water quality standards and the Clean Water Act, addressing concerns raised in the initial review.

What's Next for the Project?

With this permit in place, Disney can move forward with early site preparations, including clearing and grading work. Construction on the Cars-themed land is expected to begin in 2025, bringing two new attractions to Magic Kingdom:

  • A high-speed rally race through mountainous terrain with geysers and mudholes.
  • A family-friendly Cars ride designed for younger guests.

Subsection. You know exactly what I'm talking about when I say the scale of Cars Land compared to what we're getting in Frontierland. Cars Land refers to what we have at DCA, with 3 attractions, 3 restaurants, and 3 shops. The Cars section of Frontierland is only going to be 2 attractions and a shop. If it's a land, on a map it will have its name appear like this and we know that won't be seeing Cars Land on the maps: That's like saying all of these are lands on their own: Caribbean Plaza (1 attraction, 1 restaurant, 1 shop, 1 interactive experience, 1 meet and greet) Belle's Village (1 attraction, 2 restaurants, 1 shop) Dino-Rama (3 attractions, 1 shop) Serka Zong (1 attraction, 1 shop, 3 restaurants) Alice in Wonderland section of Disneyland (2 attractions, 1 shop)

We have Space Mountain, and Thunder Mountain, we use to have Splash Mountain. They should call this Dirt Track Mountain ;)

While I agree fundamentally, the -land suffix generally has a very specific connotation that certain posters are clearly extrapolating all the way out to a certain end that differs from Storybook Circus, Caribbean Plaza, etc. It seems like it would make more sense to just call it Piston Peak, though I know that's not official. I just very much doubt we'd be in a situation where a pairing of Moana attractions in the Fire Mountain plot would be getting called Moanaland.

If only there was a word that described a discrete area that contains some assortment of attractions, retail and/or dining…

It feels like I'm banging my head against a wall on this thread. Clearly when people are saying Cars Land, there comparing it to the actual Cars Land at DCA. If you ae referring to it as a subsection of Frontierland, which it is, it will likely be called Piston Peak. But until that's confirmed, it's just easier to call it the Cars attractions

That would make it a proper Carsland ;)

I hope it has at least 2 shops , restaurant and a QSR location to make it feel complete.

“Theme park in a theme park” isn’t something I made up. It’s how Hogsmead was originally touted and people rightly rolled their eyes. There is no inherent scale to a Cars Land. It’s very clearly a distinct area and as of right now doesn’t have a given name. A land having distinct parts isn’t something new. Magic Kingdom itself has Caribbean Plaza and Storybook Circus.

"Cars Land." That's what I'm calling it.

It is a simple request though for people to stop referring to it as Cars Land when it isn't Cars Land. We know it doesn't fit in Frontierland but that doesn't mean we should falsely be referring to this project as Cars Land. Cars Land and Cars attractions are 2 very different scales

It doesn’t matter what they re calling it or how they choose to gaslight us. All that matters is what it feels like. The two cars attractions will take up a sizeable amount of acreage and will be more or less surrounded by a ring of trees in an attempt to buffer it from the remnants of Frontierland and Liberty Square. If it looks like a duck and quacks like a duck…

With that logic, let's just say the Cars attractions are being built in MK and are actually a part of Hollywood Studios because it fits better there 🙄 Sometimes we just need to accept facts as they are and stop ignoring what we've been told. It will not be a Cars Land. It is 2 rides and the attached gift shop as part of Frontierland

Disney marketing the Cars attractions as part of Frontierland is Disney gaslighting their guests.
