Today was a big day for Ranger the rhino calf as he joined the herd at Kilimanjaro Safaris.

The four month old rhino was joined by his mom Kendi as he explored his new surroundings. Weighing in at 600 pounds, Ranger is the first addition to the herd in five years.

The animal care team is also caring for two other rhinos expected to give birth in 2021. This is especially significant, as white rhinos – the world’s second largest land animal – are an endangered species with a near-threatened status.

It's nice that they're born so close to each other, now the young ones will have playmates

Looks like there was another white rhino born at AK this week! I saw some photos on Dr. Mark Penning's Instagram account. (This may be old news... but I did a search before posting and this was the latest rhino baby news I could find. :))

If it works out either he or some of him will be distributed to other breeding programs to expand the gene pool as much as possible, sometimes this is a permanent relocation

What I especially love is that Mom Kendi was the first white rhino to be born at AK. Things have come full circle .

What is great is that all 3 of the females are having babies. This is the first one.
