Disney's Star Tours Getting Another Update? New Imagineering Permit Hints at Changes

Walt Disney Imagineering has filed a new Notice of Commencement for Star Tours at Disney's Hollywood Studios in Walt Disney World. The filing lists ThemeWorks, Inc. as the contractor, with work described as "Install set elements."

Themeworks has previously worked with Walt Disney Imagineering on Toy Story Mania and Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser.

Disney has not announced any upcoming changes or updates to Star Tours, making this permit somewhat of a mystery. The attraction has recently seen several updates, adding new destinations inspired by popular Disney+ series like "Ahsoka," "Andor," and "The Mandalorian." It should be noted that Tatooine Traders, the gift shop at the exit of Star Tours, also carries the same address, meaning it is possible this permit could be for changes to the store.

Doesn’t the concept art for Monstropolis not line up with Tattooine in its current state? Maybe they are retheming the exterior side closest to Muppets.

Possibly to address some sightline issues of Tatooine Traders from Monstropolis?

The crazy thing is, I remember first riding this attraction at Disneyland in the summer of ‘87, not too long after it opened in January of that year, and it was all the rage…that was 38 years ago…!!!!! :hilarious: Not sure what that says, other than I’m feeling a bit old…!!! ;):)

Agreed. It was a GOOD idea at the time (even if I question how clear it truly was to the average guest, including me at first), but it makes zero sense these days, and just feels cheap, despite how impressive the figures otherwise are

Yes, it uses the same address.

I hope this is for a solution to the "half-finished sets" facade. IMHO, it's one of Disney's biggest thematic black eyes (and I realize that's saying something). Now that it's no longer obviously a movie set (with the signs and equipment), today's guests think Disney just didn't finish the theming (a la Universal of old). People even look at the back of the AT-AT and say things like "wow, Disney didn't think anyone would turn around?" It's an embarrassment to the Disney name like DCA 1.0. Disney should either make it clear that this is a movie set until it's changed entirely, or change it into part of the cityscape theme now.

Is it the same address at Jedi Academy?

You're 10 days too early on this. Don't you remember the Teams call? This was supposed to be an April 1 post, remember??? So difficult to get good help these days...

It’s the second best Star Wars attraction of all time and may prove to be the most relevant and enduring over time.

I believe that there is indeed a Simpson ride in Central Florida in a place called Universal Studio's Florida. I like the Simpsons as well as the next guy, but if I want to see them I'll watch them on TV. The last Simpson ride they created sucked bad enough to create the vacuum in space.

What if they did something completely original here and cut the top of the Star Speeders off and made them look like cars. They could then show a movie from the Disney+ HIT SHOW The Simpsons. Maybe we could visit Krustyland in our car but something would go terribly wrong. A quick search of these boards reveals that many here have long-dreamed of a Simpsons ride in Central Florida. It feels like the perfect opportunity. They could even remove Jedi Training and put in a Lard-Lad’s Donuts to further build on this original concept. Duff Beer at Backlot Express, anyone?

I would be terrified to see what they come up with. As you said this is the better simulation attraction, so until they come up with something amazing, leave it alone!! Marie
