Walt Disney World hosted the largest single site for the World’s Largest Swimming Lesson today, with 1,000 students gathering at Typhoon Lagoon to learn life-saving swim skills from Disney lifeguards - and to meet Mickey Mouse and Stitch along the way.

The annual event is organized by the World Waterpark Association to promote water safety worldwide. Thousands of locations participate, but Disney’s Typhoon Lagoon once again stood out as the largest lesson site globally.

Students came from seven Florida nonprofit organizations, including:

  • Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida
  • Girl Scouts of Citrus
  • Alianza Center
  • Foundation for Foster Children
  • ELEVATE Orlando
  • PACE Center for Girls
  • Boys & Girls Clubs

More than 50 Disney lifeguards led the swim lessons, focusing on basic techniques and water safety. An additional 40 Disney VoluntEARS supported the students during the session. For many of the kids, it was their first formal swimming instruction.

“Hosting an event like this gives our cast members the chance to not only connect with the kids in our community, but to share something they’re knowledgeable and passionate about,” said Tajiana Ancora-Brown, Director of External Affairs at Walt Disney World. “Helping kids pair that skills-based learning with the fun of our water parks creates memories and moments that will stick with them forever.”

After the lesson, students spent the rest of the day enjoying the water park’s attractions. Natasha Yeung, Youth Program Supervisor for Coalition for the Homeless of Central Florida, emphasized the impact: “We’re in Florida, so there’s water everywhere, and it’s really important for the kids to know how to swim. For most of our kids, this is their favorite field trip of the year.”

The World’s Largest Swimming Lesson aims to combat drowning, which remains one of the leading causes of accidental death in children.
