Southwest Airlines is gearing up for significant changes that aim to improve customer satisfaction and operational efficiency. As revealed during its quarterly financial results in April, the airline is set to introduce assigned seating and premium seating options on all flights. This shift marks a departure from its unique open seating model, a hallmark of the airline for over 50 years.
Introduction of Assigned and Premium Seating
Southwest has decided to implement assigned seating across its fleet. The airline’s research indicates that 80% of current customers and 86% of potential customers prefer assigned seating. The change aims to attract more passengers, especially those who have chosen competitors due to the lack of seat assignments.
In addition to assigned seating, Southwest will introduce premium seating with extended legroom. Approximately one-third of the seats will offer this feature, similar to the offerings of other airlines. These changes are part of Southwest’s broader efforts to modernize its services, which have already included enhancements like faster WiFi, in-seat power, and larger overhead bins.
Introduction of Redeye Flights to Orlando
In a move to enhance its service offerings, Southwest will also begin operating overnight redeye flights. Starting on Valentine’s Day 2025, these flights will initially connect Las Vegas to Baltimore and Orlando, Los Angeles to Baltimore and Nashville, and Phoenix to Baltimore. The airline plans to expand redeye routes gradually, contributing to its transition to a 24-hour operation.

Southwest plans to share more details about the new seating configurations, cabin layouts, and the expected financial impact during its Investor Day in late September. The airline aims to make the new seating options available for booking in 2025, pending necessary approvals from the Federal Aviation Administration.
