Disney has released a first look at TRON: Ares, the highly anticipated, new installment in the TRON franchise. The film started production in January in Vancouver and is slated for release in 2025.

TRON: Ares is a follow-up to Disney’s 1982 seminal science fiction film TRON and the 2010 sequel, TRON: Legacy.

Joachim Rønning directs TRON: Ares and says, “I’m excited to be part of the TRON franchise and bring this new film to fans around the world. TRON: Ares builds upon the legacy of cutting-edge design, technology and storytelling. Now more than ever, it feels like the right time to return to the Grid.”

TRON: Ares follows a highly sophisticated Program, Ares, who is sent from the digital world into the real world on a dangerous mission, marking humankind’s first encounter with A.I. beings. The feature film stars Jared Leto, Greta Lee, Evan Peters, Hasan Minhaj, Jodie Turner-Smith, Arturo Castro, Cameron Monaghan, with Gillian Anderson.

Sean Bailey, Jeffrey Silver, Justin Springer, Jared Leto, Emma Ludbrook, and Steven Lisberger are the producers, with Russell Allen serving as executive producer.

Tron: Legacy only cost $170M in 2010. Back 15 years ago the threshold to breakeven was lower, at only 2X production budget. So it did actually breakeven during theatrical, add to that the $60M+ it made post-theatrical, plus the re-releases, and its more than broke even, at over $470M. So no it wasn't a flop at the box office. We don't know the budget for Ares, but I think there is more audience there than you realize.

I'm just hoping for the return of ElecTronica at DCA.

I just hope they're hiding it as a tie-in to Tron Legacy, even if in a small way, possibly to tie in more in the sequels.

It's a teaser so it is hard to tell. We'll see what the next trailer looks like.

    I think it looks terrific!

Something about being in the real world takes away from what Tron is. Cheap? I don't know. I'll go see it regardless. It does remind me of Pixels which I enjoyed. Well at least the soundtrack will rock.

Just curious what about it gives you Pixels vibes?

Kind of looks like pixels except it's Tron. Will likely see this one assuming it doesn't start looking horrible.

It's false in the sense it's only mostly true.

    DKampyMay 15, 2024

This is false IMO…but maybe you should move elsewhere from the Disney fan forums then

Yeah it would be so weird if a sequel followed up on a major plot point of the previous movie.
