Progress continues on the extensive refurbishment of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad at Magic Kingdom, and our latest photos show that significant new track sections are now in place, including a newly installed lift hill.
Construction crews have been steadily installing new sections of track throughout the ride, both inside and outside the mountain. The most notable development is the completion of the new lift hill, a key component of the attraction’s layout. Other portions of track can now also be seen reconnecting various parts of the ride path.
This installation work follows the complete removal of the previous track earlier this year. Unlike typical coaster replacements, Big Thunder’s ride system is deeply integrated into themed environments, making track installation more complex and time-consuming.
In addition to track work, visible progress is being made in the queue area, which is now largely covered in protective tarps. While the coverings prevent a clear look inside, it remains to be seen whether this work is structural or cosmetic.
With the new lift hill and major track segments installed, the focus will likely remain on completing the ride path, integrating show elements, and continuing structural and thematic work both inside the mountain and around the queue.
The attraction officially closed on January 6, 2025, with Disney targeting a reopening in 2026. Permits filed for the project remain active through March 2026, giving a rough sense of the expected duration.
