Walt Disney World's plans to develop just over 1400 units of affordable and attainable housing took a step forward today as the transmittal of Future Land Use Map Amendment was approved by the Orange County Board of County Commissioners with 4 votes to 2.
The plan will now move on to the next stage of approval at the state level.
Orange County Major Jerry Demings made a motion to move the plans forward for transmittal, and despite objections from other board members who favored postponing a decision, it was successful.
Speakers at the event and at least two board members expressed a primary concern about the lack of a transportation plan in an already heavily congested area of Horizons West.
Walt Disney World will contribute approximately 80 acres of land in southwest Orange County, Florida, for the development, located west of State Road 429
Residents of nearby Horizon West voiced concerns about additional traffic, lack of schools, and impacts to emergency services.
Disney has previously said that it hopes to open the first units in 2026 built by The Michaels Organization, a nationally recognized developer, which will also operate the property. The development would be just a few miles from Magic Kingdom, near schools and shopping, including Flamingo Crossings Town Center.
