Disney California Adventure to Debut First-Ever 'Coco' Attraction

An all-new attraction themed to Pixar Animation Studios' "Coco" is coming to Disney California Adventure at Disneyland Resort in California.

The attraction will be filled with the characters — and music — you know and love from the beloved movie, as you join Miguel on a trip to the land of the dead.

In this first-ever "Coco" ride in a Disney park, Walt Disney Imagineering will draw inspiration from beloved classics, like Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. "We're bringing our skeletal cast of characters to life in a big way through the latest Audio-Animatronics technology," Josh told the crowd. "These figures will appear in ways you'll have to see to believe."

Disney says that work begins on the attraction in 2026.

First, we don't know when in 2026 it is going to break ground, my guess is February at the earliest, but realistically April or May. Second, I say best case scenario this takes 2.5 years. Rise would have taken the same amount of time to build with or without Galaxy's Edge around it. Anything is possible though.

If I'm reading this correctly, you are insinuating that it is going to take longer to build a C-Ticket (D-Ticket at best) than it did to build all of Galaxy's Edge? Let me PM you my address and you can send me whatever it is you're inhaling.

With construction confirmed to break ground in 2026, maybe we will get an opening timeframe at DD23 2025.

Just because something is smaller doesn't mean that it isn't constrained by chronological construction processes. Also important to note that the rides are usually the first thing worked on in lands, so they often take the longest. They start restaurants and shops later because they take less time and then can be done simultaneously with the second half of ride construction and testing. Anything is possible, but if I were a betting woman I would put a good chunk of change on Coco opening late 28 or early to mid 29.

Yeah, MMRR is not a good example for how long it would take to build a singular dark ride. The first stages of demolition for Galaxy's Edge started the last week of February 2016 and the 14 acre land was opened just 3 years 3 months later (sans RotR due to technical troubles). I don't see why Coco can't be done in 2 years, especially when we don't know how far in the design process and building of the internal set pieces and AAs they already are at.

Yeah, and MMRR had a construction pause during the shutdown, so 2 years definitely seems possible.

Encanto is currently on this timeframe. I don’t think that indicates anything per se, but it’s clearly possible.

I rather see Disney rip out Autopia and much the areas around former Innovation building…or conserve Avatar for west end parks expansions.

MMRR I believe broke ground in fall 2019 for the original 2022 opening, so if they start in Jan 2026, they could have It ready by LA2028.

MMRR went vertical in September 2020 and opened January 2023, and I assume that's with pandemic-era restrictions on the construction team.

Hahah the sun came out for the first time in 5 days. I'm feeling optimistic. Ive been leaning 2029 too. 2.5 years I think is doable though. This isn't a whole land or even something extravagant like ROTR or the Avatar boat ride. I'm expecting a D+ ticket level boat ride. The Olympics might give them the extra bit of incentive to get it done asap. They built Galaxies Edge in 3.5 years. They can build a D ticket boat ride in 2.5 years if they want to. Thats the question though. Do they want to? Or do they want to spread out the new offerings? They’re also building two Avengers attractions simultaneously.

I would not expect Coco until later 2028 at the very earliest. When has Disney ever built a contemporary dark ride in two and half years (and that's assuming they start construction in January). Not to mention it will 100% be replacing either infrastructure or park space, so that adds even more time.

On paper it seems a bit off conceptually even with all the parks current inconsistencies. But when you are walking into a beautiful land full of trees/ shade and state of the art attraction I don’t think most people will mind. Of course that’s only if the alien fortress at Avengers Campus is bothering you. If not, I doubt this will. Putting this in the Simba lot would help a lot with the perception of this land being out of place at the current park.

I’m still dreading Avatar being in place at DCA. It feels So wrong!
