UPDATE: May 30 9:15am - Rock 'n' Roller Coaster is back open (again)
ORIGINAL POST:
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster at Disney's Hollywood Studios is once again closed to guests as its refurbishment continues.
The hugely popular rollercoaster on Sunset Blvd. reopened for the Memorial Day Weekend, but as of Tuesday, May 30, it is again closed.
No significant changes have been made to the Rock 'n' Roller Coaster ride experience, with the refurbishment instead taking place on the launch system and general maintenance. Guests who rode the coaster this past weekend reported improved UV lighting through the black light areas. The ride has been experiencing extended downtimes in recent years, and this refurbishment is likely addressing some of those issues.
Rock 'n' Roller Coaster initially closed for refurbishment on February 21, 2023, and no reopening date was given. It remains unclear how long the coaster will be closed in this second phase of the refurbishment.
Construction permits for Rock 'n' Roller Coaster's refurbishment have expiration dates of mid-September 2023. While it isn't possible to translate permit filings to actual project timelines with high confidence, some signs point to the possibility of this refurbishment lasting into late summer.
Disney's official website states, "This rocktastic attraction will resume its super-stretch limo rides in summer 2023." The summer season will run through September 23, 2023, so a September reopening would fit both Disney's summer estimation and align with the permit dates.
