Crane at Big Thunder Mountain Railroad - Decembet 12, 2024
Posted: Thursday December 12, 2024 9:55am ET by WDWMAGIC Staff

A large crane is now in position behind Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in Frontierland at Walt Disney World's Magic Kingdom.

The crane, which is now clearly visible from certain vantage points around Frontierland, will be used for tasks like dismantling and replacing track sections, as well as other work requiring a large reach. The scale of the crane suggests that substantial updates are planned for Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which is set to close for refurbishment on January 6, 2025, and reopen sometime in 2026.

What to Expect During the Refurbishment

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad's refurbishment will be its most extensive since a four-month update in 2012. Permits filed for the project indicate work on the ride system, infrastructure, and electrical systems.

Disney has promised "a little bit of new magic" when the attraction reopens, but the exact details of what will change remain under wraps. Previous updates to Big Thunder at Disneyland included enhanced ride systems, updated vehicles, and refreshed theming, so it's possible Magic Kingdom's version could receive similar upgrades.

Stay tuned for more updates as the project unfolds.

It's folded in half in its "lowered" position to help sightlines and for safety. It will only be extended when needed

Here's a look at the same style of crane. Not fully extended, but it might give you a better idea of reach

Ohhhh that makes much more sense now. I wonder how high it can get when fully extended. No doubt it will be able to reach the entire BTM site.

It is currently folded in half

Ok, but how does it work when it's in the shape of an X. Don't cranes usually move from point A to point B? How does the crane move when it's anchored to the ground in two places?

It’s only one crane.

HauntedPirate41 minutes ago

But that's the (unofficial) reason given for not putting the lights back on the castle, too many people complained that the crane was in their "magical castle pictures". 🤔

Disgruntled Walt45 minutes ago

Perhaps this is a stupid question, but I acknowledge my complete ignorance here: Could somebody explain the function of the "two cranes kissing" like that? Doesn't seem like they would be able to accomplish their purpose of moving things when they are locked together in an X.

If all that comes out of this is a quite lift hill, I’ll declare victory.

Until I see our runged friend on site this refurb shall be no more than an elaborate hoax

But... but Ladder! It's not a TRUE construction site until he shows up

ToTBellHop1 hour ago

No need. They have belay lines.

Not really - very easy to edit that out.

Who cares about cranes? Has the ladder shown up yet?
