New Big Thunder Mountain Train

Another major step forward in the ongoing Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment at Magic Kingdom has been spotted - the first of the new ride trains is now on the track. While the train remains mostly covered by a tarp, visible portions confirm that it is a newly manufactured train.

Though mostly covered, the visible details of the train are similar in style of the updated trains introduced during Disneyland’s 2014 Big Thunder Mountain Railroad refurbishment. That project included new ride vehicles with improved ergonomics, enhanced safety systems, and updated materials designed for smoother and more reliable performance.

The installation of the first new train follows several months of heavy construction and system upgrades, including:

  • Complete track removal and replacement
  • Ongoing queue area work, still covered in tarps
  • Ride envelope testing vehicles

With new trains arriving on-site, Disney will begin system integration testing, where new trains are cycled through the full track to test timing, safety, and show elements. While Disney has not announced a specific reopening date, the project is expected to conclude sometime in 2026.

That is great when you do what you should while closed. Mini refurbished is right. Like so much of the MK...ran over hours and under refurbished.

Not really. Either way track replacement is still needed eventually.

Actually Big Thunder was one the rides WDW constantly gave mini refurbs to. I remember it being closed pretty consistently through the years.

    Years of neglect.

Still quite a bit of work to do on the exterior, ride testing and possible revisions to the rock work (unlikely but possible), and most importantly, the completion of the indoor sections of the ride which we have very little information on how they will be changed. As with most all construction, work looks to progress very quickly at the beginning of a project while the tail end visually stalls despite work still being completed.

Tell me again why this coaster is still going to be closed for over a year again?

Does anyone know if they replaced track in and around the station? Kinda hard to tell, but it looks like the old track there.
